Maine Light Tackle and Fly Fishing for Shark
Shark fishing here in the Midcoast area of Maine starts in early August. We fish offshore 10 to 15 miles in the thermoclines of the Gulf of Maine. Blue Shark ranging from 40—250 pounds cruise these temperature breaks. We use light (relatively) tackle on these big fish: 30 pound class stand up gear or 12-14 wt. fly rods. After arriving at a good location we set out a chum slick of ground herring that draws the big ones in from as much as a mile away. Fly fishing for shark has become very popular amongst our clients. As a mater of fact, one of Obsession Charter's clients Fred Danforth holds the State of Maine Blue Shark Fly Rod Record at 101 pounds. As with all of our trips, all gear, bait and tackle are included but feel free to bring your own along if you wish. Lunch, Soft drinks and snacks are provided. Shark trips run from early August through late September. We depart Bath at 7:00 AM on the OBSESSION for 8 hours. Maximum capacity for our shark trips is 3 clients at a cost of $600 for the trip. (not per person) This is a deep sea trip 10 -15 miles offshore so weather and wind can sometimes can cause cancellations or the need to stay inshore and fish for stripers and blues. It is best to contact Capt. Dave the day before your trip to discuss the latest weather forecast. Please bring a light jacket / raincoat, sunscreen and sunglasses. If your prone to motion sickness take some medication well before we depart. If at all possible, please do not ware black soled shoes or work boots, they really mark up the deck of the boat, thank you. FMI > on Reservations |
