Tuna Fishing in Maine
Football
tuna (weighing 40-100 pounds) show up in the Gulf of Maine in July and usually stay into the
fall. They hang on offshore structure while feeding on herring and
mackerel. We cruise areas 5-15 miles from shore where these baitfish
consistently hold looking for breaking schools of tuna, then maneuver up
to the schools and sight cast with 12 - 14 weight fly rods and 50 lb.
class spinning gear. The experience of a tuna’s savage bite followed by
screaming drag is unforgettable. Size and possession limits change often
so check with Capt. Dave regarding what can be taken home on your
charter. You can also check out the
NOAA Fisheries HMS
website for current tuna regulations. Successful trips depend on
light winds and 1-3 foot seas. If it blows up and the seas become too
rough to spot tuna we can spend the balance of your trip fishing for
striped bass and bluefish inshore assuring that you don't miss out on a
fun filled day on the water. We depart Bath at sunrise (4:30-6:00
AM) on the OBSESSION for 6-7 hours. Maximum capacity for our Tuna trips
is 4 clients at a cost of $575 for the trip. (Not per person) It is best
to contact Capt. Dave a day or two before your trip to discuss the
latest weather forecast.
Please bring: light jacket / raincoat, sunscreen
and sunglasses. If you're prone to motion sickness take some medication
well before we depart. If at all possible, please do not wear black
soled shoes or work boots; they really mark up the deck of the boat,
thank you.
