Charlotte Harbor – Pine Island Sound Fishing Report February 20, 2017

Conditions: I fished the East Wall, Matlacha Pass, Gasparilla Sound, Bull Bay and Turtle Bay last week. The water clarity was very good throughout the Harbor and it should be the same this week. There's a red tide bloom along the beaches from Boca Grande to Manasota Key but it hasn't entered the sounds or bays...

Water temps are now in the mid-low 70s. Salinity remains high due to the lack of rain. Fishing conditions are excellent.

Bait the fish are feeding on: Shrimp, Crabs, Pinfish, some glass minnows and sardines. Not much whitebait (threadfin Herring and scaled sardines) around.

Target species right now: Redfish, Sea Trout, Snook, Ladyfish, Jack crevalle and Bluefish.

Fishing tactics: Just about any tactic you want to try is working right now. The edges of the flats are holding sea trout, ladyfish and some jacks. The deep potholes have jacks, trout, bluefish and some redfish around them. The sand flats and mangroves are holding snook of all sizes.

My fly fishing tip of the week: Keep one rod rigged with a sink tip or sinking intermediate line and a weighted fly for the deep holes. Lots of snook holding in 3-5 feet of water right now.

My spin fishing tip of the week: Rig for both shallow and deep fishing. This time of year the redfish and snook are moving onto the flats but are spending a lot of their time in the holes and along the edges.

7 day outlook: Perfect morning incoming tides this week. Looks wet on Wednesday otherwise dry. No big winds predicted. Fishing should be great for redfish and snook. Lots of seatrout and ladyfish around too. There are a few jacks and bluefish adding to the catch possibilities.
