05-15-17 Fishing Report - Capt. Dave Pecci

Conditions: The morning tides will be the most productive this week. Water clarity should be very good.

Bait the fish are feeding on: Shrimp, crabs, pinfish, glass minnows, whitebait (threadfin Herring and scaled sardines)

Target species right now: Tarpon, Redfish, Sea Trout, Snook

Fishing tactics: This will be a great week to fish for tarpon on the beaches. When they are rolling and cruising; position your boat a few hundred feet in front of them, shut off your outboard and wait for the pods to reach you. They are spooky, even the noise from a trolling motor or your boat radio will give them lockjaw.

My fly fishing tip of the week: Pre spawn tarpon can be very picky. Change your fly when you get refusals. Try both crab and baitfish patterns. Having two rods rigged with different flies will give you more shots at them.

My spin fishing tip of the week: Tarpon will be picky about bait too. Have crabs, ladyfish, whitebait, pinfish and other stuff onboard and you will get them to bite.

7 day outlook: It's going to be hot again this week with a slight chance of showers daily. We'll have east winds and water temps in the high 70s to low 80s. Perfect conditions for tarpon fishing on the beaches and in the passes.
